This project involves a publication design of Folding Beijing & Invisible Planets by science fiction writer Hao Jingfang. The design choices behind this work were inspired by the concept of wormholes — one that I chose to make an association with based on my personal interpretation of the stories. By making an analogy with the forbidden journey made by the protagonist of Folding Beijing, it creates a unique reading experience by simulating a theoretical crossing through a wormhole. This can be seen from the cover, layout design, printing technique and the types of paper used.
The pages that comprise the short stories of Invisible Planets appear sporadically throughout the publication, akin to planets positioned randomly within the universe. Printed on translucent paper and serving as flaps to unfold, each planet is not just given a textual description, but is also described visually. This is seen through the layout of the text, as well as the graphical elements of the pages.
